Listen: PAAR – Hone

Every so often something of interest turns up in my mailbox, this is one of those rare occurrences. PAAR have self-released a couple of releases before “Hone“, three double-singles and now an EP on vinyl via Grzegorzki Records, as well as a self-issued cassette and CD.

What I like about PAAR is that they don’t succumb to the same clichéd things that make modern post-punk bad, they do not focus so heavily on “being” post-punk – they drawn influences from shoegaze and focus mainly on a heavy atmosphere where the main attraction is the singer herself. Sometimes her voice fit in well, like in “SYN”, other times it is does not go well with the sound – but as they are just honing their sound with their first “proper” release, it all makes sense.

There’s also an influence taken from popular music which can not be understated. It is good that they do not shy away from influences just because they want to be a gimmick, this is the real deal – there is a sincerity in both the structure of the songs themselves and there are some gems within the lyrics as well.

I suggest you purchase something from them, support their music so they can make more and hopefully they will develop the sound into something otherworldly. I can highly recommend this release.

 

Listen: Walk Onto Sun – Grow Static

Walk Onto Sun released his second release, and second EP “Grow Static” in October of 2017, it’s been a long time since I was introduced to it by the musician himself – but now is the time to delve into the music – and see if it holds up as well as his first debut-EP “In the Inside“.

First track “Isn’t Real” is a stunning piece that grows on you after the first erratic steps the beats take in different directions, stuttering beats that flow upon an atmosphere of otherworldliness and paranoia – slowly taking the form of a regular four-oh-four beat, but taking bits and pieces out of the sound-scape the further in you get, making it as weird as it was starting out, as you get to the end.

It’s like a bad dream that you can’t awake from. Some of the vocals make you wonder when it will turn into a proper martial industrial piece, but it holds its guard up against such a transgression. Even though some if it might seem out of rhythm, the blending of arrhythmic noises and confusing electronic synthesizers together – makes you realize what time went into making this song.

“Hollowed Out” is more sinister, it follows less of an experimental route, and includes the deep baselines you’d want to hear in his music – a more ritualistic approach in combination with industrial music, in the setting of a post-industrial séance. Even though it is more primitive in relation to the first song, the vocals make it a monotonous piece of music as it drives you into a feverish state of mind.

Though some of the vocals might turn you off from the track, you take time to appreciate the wondrously created atmosphere – as it seems to turn for a more wicked approach each time a new sound is added in, but never lets you down when it come to being consistent without making it too predictable.

In “Feral Plains“, Ben Engebretson (Walk Onto Sun) is assisted by Steve Holms in the form of metal percussions – this is really what keeps the song on track and adds a focused vibe to an otherwise outdrawn, hazy kind of downtempo ambient industrial music. We’re not sure if the vocals are meant to be so monotonous, but it both adds and takes away from the general feel of the song.

Ironically enough, the title-track “Grow Static” and the last song of the release, is actually the best one in our opinion. It summarizes what Walk Onto Sun is capable of when he channels the right percussion at the right time, the right rhythm at the right time – and the right atmosphere at the right time. Everything in this song seems way more planned then in the other ones, so hopefully this can make a full-length album a reality in this year before it ends.

All-in-all it is an interesting album, he strays away from the first EP a lot, but much of it is more of the same. It doesn’t matter if it stays this way or if it develops, but some of the more experimental elements in his music is not that alluding – but the vocals on the last song is more impressive then those on the rest of the EP.

Listen: Giant Swan, Rivière de Corps, Luminance, and V/A – Spänningen Band II

We’ve had quite a run for many years, the machinery have worked as intended but sometimes they need to be carefully restored to their former glory once again. We have no excuses to not post anything, it is just that the current musical climate is so lethargic – either waddle through a pool of mud – or directly finding the gems you’ve sought out for so long.

Running your own label takes time, and having a full-time job hinders the crew from working on this site at all times. The intention for the future is to update more frequently, the ideal would be once or twice a day – but time needs to be portioned up for this to work – which is difficult to say the least.

It’s been a long time since anything from Mannequin Records was featured on this webzine, we’ve not really been keeping up with what they’ve been doing – but they’ve released quite a number of records since then.

The latest of their releases is “High Waisted“, by a Bristol-based duo Giant Swan, their second EP in their discography and a really good mixture of ominous industrial music that have an outstretched hand into more obfuscated music like rhythmic noise.

It is too complicated in rhythm to be equated with regular techno, even though some of the settings and moods suggest otherwise. Maybe industrial or hard techno would share more similarity with the genrebending they’re doing in this maddening approach. “The Rest Of His Voice” is easily the best song on the whole record, as it captures their whole essence on this EP, furiously stomping into your eardrums without any hesitation.

Maybe this french one-man outfit, Rivière de Corps have drawn a lot of influence from Pure Ground? A lot of the material is reminiscent of the earlier outputs of that duo. Both aesthetically and musically, a lot of it sounds alike, some of the songs are alright on this release but other songs like “retour du dieu plutonium” should’ve had more thought put into them.

Even though a lot of songs on this release needs a few adjustments here and there, the general theme of the record and the aesthetic aspects of the release as a whole make it better. With the song “échec critique” they reach a high point of the release itself, if only all the other songs had the same standard, it would be an even better release.

In general, it is satisfying to listen to and it explores a lot of themes and moods that don’t need that much more additional presentation. If you like the music, consider buying a cassette directly from the bandcamp of Vague à l’Âme, and listen to the release in whole down below.

We’ve covered Luminance some time way back when, but now they’re released a single, a different version of the song “Martyr” (from The Cold Rush), which is more mystical in its approach and a calmer version, titled “Martyr” (Version Longue). The only reason for us to cover a single, is basically because this is a great version that stands on its own and challenges the original version.

This is the point of music, to exponentially go in different directions and instead of stagnating it evolves in manners that might be unknown to the listener until he or she hears it. Could we all agree that french lyrics, when done properly, adequately enhances music and takes it into a whole other dimension? It adds a perfectly great mysterious undertone which is desperately needed in the first minute of this song.

When I boast about Sweden, I boast about these kinds of compilations. We’re truly great at discovering obscure artists and groups, and we’re even better at showcasing them in equally as obscure compilations. It haven’t been on our horizons, but since we heard about Yta Recordings, we felt we needed to give them some coverage somehow.

“Spänningen Band II” is the second compilation in a series, coming in strong with a hard-hitting claustrophobic track by Adore that gently shove in hints of a compact, ambitious dreary landscape of sound that is equal to none. Most of these artists and groups are unknown to us, but when you pass through the quirky repetitive acid mixture that is hidden between Nima Khak and Lrh, a more urgent response is felt within the song by United Hive Mind Of Sweden, perfectly igniting the next artist Stilnoct.

We must admit that we find some of these artists hard to listen to, and that is not because of the music itself, but it is because the same boring archetype of techno music is repeated throughout the compilation in ways that are common with these compilations, unfortunately. The music itself is well-produced, there is no question about that – but after Adore dropped “Time Is Anima“, everything else was pale in comparison.

Celldöd graciously ends this compilation with “Du Som Försvann“, maybe it was the start and finish that would keep you listening throughout? If so, it’s a good compromise. Even though some of the music is not really in our ballpark, it is a good enough compilation to recommend because of its aesthetics and that it contains a few really good tracks, and two really great tracks.

Listen: Grand Mal x – Darkness

Harrowing, eclectic dance music for those who appreciate the esoteric. Grand Mal x surprise us with another release, in companionship with Michael Idehall whose music can be related in one way or another to this project musically, but they deal with the concepts differently. What is most enjoyable when listening to “Darkness” is the complex synthesizers that pin angelic towards demonic – sin against the good – a constant battle between what is right and what is wrong.

“Stjärndamm” is our favorite song on this release, with a purposeful barrage of basedrums that hammer into your consciousness, the dreariness of the atmosphere consumes you as it progresses – or regresses. There are some beautiful chords laden from the synthesizer as well, together with second long samplings that pierce through the malevolence of it all – though the concept of it seems beautiful when you utter the title, but the music itself suggests something different.

A thoroughly complacent album, a deep insight to everything that shaped and formed Grand Mal x from before – concentrated into a roller-coaster of emotions, messages and sublimity. There are facets you don’t recognize once you hear it the first time, as in “Black Book” which was co-written with Mattias Ivarsson, a very different song that detaches from the release as a whole, but knits it finely together with “A Star For Everyone” – a song also featured on our own compilation “Volume 2 – It Will Never Be The Same“.

Listen: mar, Hanetration, TRBL

Nice, unpretentious and skewed electronic music from Marta aka mar, in the shape and form of a distant feeling of being disconnected but at the same time warmth and comfort, with “who?” she conveys a sense of aesthetically fulfilled beauty in terms of music – and an uneasiness that lingers throughout – you’re always unsure and on the edge, as you’re caressed by whoever you think about right now.

Somewhat nostalgic, a big chunk of unorthodox but well-produced electronica aligned with stiff beats – and a sweet compromise together with non-electronic music. There’s sincerity to the music and not the usual poseur trapped within their confinements of wanting to be “outside the box”, and this is what separates mar from other projects that might sound like this, though being as young as she is – only 23 – makes it more impressive and you should take time out of your day, evening or night to listen to this.

Hopefully we’ll hear more from her in the future, it would be intriguing if she accentuated her own vocals and made that a prime focus, it would enhance the overall sound and definitely pit her against the more well-versed people within experimental electronica, as she’s talented.

The one-man show I truly admire is Hanetration, his work ethic when it comes to music surpasses many musicians, and he carefully hones his craft to get better and better at it – so with “Ancients EP” – he delves deeper into the different elements: Water, Fire, Air, Earth and Aether. It encompasses each element beautifully and it sounds just like what you would expect from the name, an atmosphere which keeps you in and gets you out of your mind as quickly as possible.

There is something otherworldly to his music, which is obvious for anyone who’s listened to this first releases. What we’re looking for in this is something that keeps it all together, and in that he’s succeeded – as his earlier releases tended to be inspired by all and nothing at the same time – a whirlwind of creative outputs, now distilled into a more headstrong, ambitious image of himself and his music.

It is not something one would listen to regularly, but it is soothing in a way and calms your nerves. We’re blessed to have such a wide array of different influences peeking through, making themselves noticed through small cracks in the layers of each of the songs, our favorite being the constantly pulsating song “Air“. Now time for some intensity, with TRBL and the release “Sleep Inducer“, you get pumping techno, industrial and seriously nostalgic rave sounds all in one. Even though it is close to being a gimmick, there’s a certain vibe to it that separates it from being a full-frontal assault and a clone, which can be hinted in the carefully placed synthesizer stabs here and there, and the breakdowns which slowly turns things on their head.

“Perplexed” is one of our favorite songs, a fast-paced beast of a song that is so acidic you’d have to turn up in a Hazmat suit even to be able to dance to this – bordering happy hardcore territory – yet keeping the trance and rave atmosphere intact, without going overboard with the influences. What’s great about the first track, the title track “Sleep Inducer“, is that it reflects a lot on the more sinister themes that can be put into techno, there’s a darker vibe to it, maybe not as hardcore as the other tracks – but something is lurking down below.

Simply put – this is something you should get your hands on, despite only being in a digital format. It is well-produced and carries everything on its own, despite being only three tracks – though all are different variations of the same theme, derived from different times and compiled into three sections – techno with industrial overtones, techno/trance with rave overtones – and a more psychedelic acid techno experience. Titta/Lyssna: Erik Edsbagge Engström – Sista Silvret

Tidigare, vilket nu känns som för evigheter sedan, har vi skrivit om Erik Edsbagge Engström och hans upptåg som Ereden och E.E. Engström & The Twin Street Tree Trunk Love Ensemble. Det är inte mycket vi kommer ihåg, men det som etsat sig fast i minnet är för det första – välkomponerad och ambitiös musik – så det blir lite déja vu när han upprepar sig med “Sista Silvret” med sitt eget namn. Musiken påminner om en mer psykedelisk version av vad som slentrianmässigt kallas för “americana” – fast istället ersatt med “nordicana“.

Man blir upprymd av den nostalgiska samplingen i “Göteborg“, ett släng av det gråare men numera historiskt otillgängliga delen av Sverige. Trots att han avviker från det mer instrumentala måttet av singer-songwriter och inte drar sig från att låna in lite synthmusik, så passar det bäst med den mer lågmälda och tillbakadragna tonen i låtarna som helhet – även om vissa individuella låtar är bättre än andra – så blir det bäst när det lyssnas igenom helt och hållet.

Även om det rent generellt blickar framåt, så tar man ändå med sig mycket av det som varit, vilket blir fint på något sätt. Det är beviset på att man inte bara kan tro på “utveckling” som sådant, utan man måste veta var man kommer ifrån. Lyssna: Malmö Nya Dronesällskap, Himlakropp, Iron Pike, The OhNos

Det ryms alldeles för mycket i underjorden. Egentligen borde det vara helt tomt där nere, men ibland kryper de upp ur avgrunden för att gästa jordelivet. Det första som händer är hos Malmö Nya Dronesällskap, ny musik från någon som förhoppningsvis är Malmöbo på riktigt och inte inflyttad från Stockholm. Jonas från Palmless är i alla fall involverad och vi fick det skickat till oss mejlledes.

Över tretton minuter långa “Det Första Tecknet; Jätten” är ett virrvarr av passande genrer, från ambient och drone till utdragen post-rock. Mystiken ligger som en slöja över ett öde ljudlandskap, ett positivt tecken är att det i denna låt är att majoriteten av det som händer i låten är inte bara utfyllnad för att låten ska bli så lång som möjligt, utan det är väldigt känslobaserat, från vackra lågmälda melodier till kalla, hårda ekande toner som övertar. När allt plötsligt känns så utarmat fylls det ut med bombastiskt slagverk, som gör allt mer fylligt och inte lika tomt.

Samtidigt som det känns väldigt primitivt och tribalistiskt, så öppnar det upp för pånyttfödelsen av drone som är acceptabel att överhuvudtaget lyssna på. De olika texturerna smälter samman på ett nästan ädelt vis, som om det är någon inneboende ömsesidighet. När det ena dör ut följs det av det andra, i ständig utveckling men aldrig invecklat till något oförståeligt och pretentiöst. Verket ackompanjeras av en text skriven av Fredrik Segerfalk i Helsingborg, 2017. Läs texten samtidigt som du lyssnar.

Denna trio baserade i Malmö, bandet Iron Pike, är något helt nytt för oss. Vi har inte hört talas om dem mer än genom sökfunktionen på bandcamp, men det är via den man hittar allt man tycker om. Nu aktuella med släppet “II” som även kommer att komma på kassett. En makaber blandning av vad som kan angränsa till vild powerviolence, förpackat mitt emellan doom metal och sludge metal. Sångarens vrålande skulle göra sig bra i ett powerviolenceband, så förhoppningarna finns där att ett malmöbaserat sådant kan ta sig ur startgroparna och predika om ämnen tillhörande staden eller länet.

Lyckligtvis skiljer de sig en hel del för vad som är standard i dessa genrer, vilket gör det hela mer intressant. Det är mycket mer fokus på helheten än de individuella delarna, men även deras hänsyn till detaljerna är häpnadsväckande bra. Det är grått, dystert och rått – men emellan allt det där finns det en avgrundsdjup mistantropi som inte kan beskrivas i ord.

Trots att det bara är tre låtar så känns det mer än så, även om längden på dessa är över sex minuter. Skulle mycket väl kunna vara ett mini-album, men det är bara för att det är så njutbart att lyssna på, man kan spela det om och om igen. Föreslår att ni köper den fysiska kassetten så fort den släpps för att stödja deras musik, men tills dess får ni köpa den digitala varianten. Ett kort tillägg på slutet: estetiken är också enastående.

Nu släpper vi det lokalpatriotiska. Även om det första släppet som Himlakropp gjorde på Jämmerdosa var mer intressant rent tematiskt, och med influenserna – så är det senaste och kommande släppet “Sunnan” även det något att ha. Även om det inte är vår kopp av té så kan vi rekommendera det ändå, men det beror på den musikaliska skickligheten. Allt är väldigt mästerfullt lagt, och lekfullt. Det är nyskapande på flera sätt och den väldigt dominerande ljudbilden som den första låten “Jakarta” har, gör att resten av låtarna även de omgärdas av samma omtanke.

Detta hade med lätthet kunnat vara ett soundtrack till ett spel. Särskilt låten “Kanada” är uppslukande, men det hade varit mer passande om det kunnat vara än mer influerat av låttitelns namn. Dock går det instrumentala inte av för hackor, det är med snabb fart man ger sig ut på en äventyrlig resa och den ständiga rytmen känns som ett tuffande tåg. Tur att vi fick ett mejl från Jämmerdosa som introducerade detta. Omslagsbilden gjord av Max Strand är väldigt passande, som om det var uttänkt från första början vad det skulle bli och vara, innan man ens visste vad det skulle vara för släpp. Lyssna nedanför.

The Ohnos kontaktade oss i samband med deras släpp på Rundgång Rekords, betitlat “Sounds From The Basement“. Trots att garage rock i allmänhet inte är särskilt intressant rent musikaliskt, så är vissa av de influenser de lånar från andra genrer det som gör deras musik mer lockande. När det kommer till punkigheten så märks det i låttitlarna, även om det även återspeglar sig på andra sätt, tyvärr blir det uttjatat. Att man kan höra de olika instrumenten så klart trots att det är väldigt skramligt i övrigt är positivt. Sångerskan är väldigt skicklig, men det märks tydligast i “Trail Of Entrails“, där kommer popigheten väl till hands och gör allt mer välljudande.

Hade fler av låtarna varit likt den hade man varit såld direkt. Den sammanhängande estetiken när det kommer till omslaget är väldigt tilltalande, och skickligt ritad. Samtidigt som man får både positiva och negativa vibbar av musiken så finns det potential. Förhoppningsvis utvecklar sig musiken i rätt riktning så att den inte blir stel, kliché och likriktad som allt annat tyvärr har en tendens att bli. Dock måste det bli en rekommendation i detta fallet eftersom att allt, sammanfattat är bättre än mycket i samma genrer. Vi hade gett allt för en utveckling av dödsrocksvibbarna man får i vissa av låtarna. Lyssna till deras släpp här nedan och köp vinylen från Rundgång Rekords.

 

 

Listen: Dorisburg – Venom

First single by Dorisburg since 2016’s “Time Stretch Totem” on Aniara Recordings, make for a well-thought out venture into the deep end of techno. Mixing the best elements of both atmosphere and beat, the acidic nature of each track on this double-single release is more then enough for a listening session. Each instrument is well-placed and the texture of each sound is mind-blowing in the sense of how good it translates musically, when put together with everything else.

The artwork for the release is ambiguous but simplified and pleasant aesthetically.  Mountain Explosion Device is the home to this release, having only been used up til’ now as a platform for Stockholm producer Kalawila to release some of his own music. The release itself is a very limited edition vinyl featuring “Venom” on the A-side and “Serum” on the B-side.

Lyssna: DDR Space Program – Race To Win

Ett uppiggande släpp, minst sagt. DDR Space Program från Stockholm levererar optimistisk och dansant retrowave, i och med det senaste släppet “Race To Win“. Det låter som något som skulle kunna vara ett reklamsläpp för Tour De France på åttiotalet. Allt handlar om fart och flärd, ‘var den förste i mål och ta hem vinsten’.

Uppsvinget som denna slags musik har fått på senare tid är intressant och kan reflekteras över, för vem kan egentligen ifrågasätta den framtidsoptimism som kännetecknade 80-talet? Hur väl passar den in i 2010-talet? Det känns väldigt främmande att denna tidsanda kunnat återuppstå, så det är magiskt hur väl den kunnat anpassas i musikform till hur vi lever nu. Trots att det ibland känns malplacerat, så lyckas DDR Space Program producera en ambitiös och närmast gudomlig ljudbild.

Det måste också tilläggas att en av de främsta influenserna är italo disco, kanske inte i sin renaste form, men i samklang med nyare electroclash – vilket gör det hela ett snäpp intressantare, eftersom att den genren i sig sällan är något att hänga i granen. Det här är vad han själv har att säga om släppet:

“Race to win är DDR Space Programs andra släpp. Som vanligt är den inspelad i min hemmastudio på mina analoga syntar och sedan mixad ihop med min kompis i hans studio. Det är viktigt att för mig att använda riktiga syntar när jag spelar in. Det är en viss känsla i att sitta och ratta på riktiga grejer och så låter det oftast så mycket bättre.

EPn har ett cykeltema, vilket kanske märks. Mest för att jag själv börjat cykla väldigt mycket och tycker det är otroligt frigörande och kul, samtidigt som det på något sätt passar genren eftersom både spacesynth och cykling är snabbt och tufft. Från början var nog inte tanken att det skulle handla om just cykling, men när jag skrev “Le Tour” så kände jag att alla låtar passade in ett sådant sammanhang.

EPn har skrivits och spelats in parallellt med att jag skrivit låtar och spelat in med mitt andra projekt “Carino Cat” som är renodlad italo disco. Självklart tar jag ibland idéer från det ena projektet och lånar ut till det andra, vilket säkert gör att italoinfluenserna är ganska tydliga i DDR Space Program. Känslan jag vill få fram med DDR Space Program är att folk som lyssnar på det ska känna att det andas 80-tal. Tiden då gated reverb var norm, virveln var blaskig, syntarna var analoga och musiken var bäst.“

Lyssna: Baula, Stadens Brus

Baula är tillbaka återigen med en låt inte helt olik deras förra, “Just Like Yesterday“, men i denna är det mer sväng och känslan andas svensk indie-pop mer än någonsin. Det finns en mer post-punkig vibb till denna i bemärkelsen att basen är tyngre, musiken koncentrerar sig mer kring det mörka, det obestämda. Även om utsvävelserna är få så finns de där för att påminna oss om det känslosamma som genomsyrar låten.

“Nova” är ett steg i samma riktning, mot ett konkret mål och mot någonting större än vad de levererat hittills. Lyrikerna i låten är simplistiska men tjänar syftet till att sätta ett större fokus på musiken som sådan även om de tar upp en stor yta i låten. Sommarslutet hade väl inte kunnat sluta på ett mer passande vis? När vi nu tagit oss in i September känns det mer passande för detta mörker att tränga igenom. Låt oss få vägen dit visade av självaste Baula. När staden ekar tom så är dett vad som kan ljuda igenom. Omslaget är gjort av Fanny Valentin och låten spelades in av bandet tillsammans med Henryk Lipp i studio Music A Matic i Göteborg.

Markus Hulthén har passat på att utvidga sitt musikaliska engagemang och rötterna har spridit sig till Stadens Brus – där han med hjälp av Henrik Öhberg (på trummor), Petter Lindhagen från Feeder Recordings (filtersvep) på mix och samproduktion av låten. Vad heter den? Jo, “Oväntat Möte”. Enligt honom själv är det ett försök att låta Etiopisk (Hailu Megra som inspiration), men det faller kort för en psykedelisk masspsykos.

Personligen tycker jag att det psykedeliska gärna får ta utrymme på bekostnad av vad han försökt att få det att låta som. Det är välproducerat, fint utskissat med tillfälle för utmärkta allegorier som passar sig bäst i ett underjordiskt zine. Tyvärr är det abstrakta konstverket som är omslaget tänkt att föreställa något (eller inte), en påminnelse om hur denna sorts musik inte borde gestaltas överhuvudtaget. Även om det psykedeliska gärna får influera musiken så gör det sig inte särskilt bra i övriga medium. Illustration av Andre Kleine.
